Teaching Portfolio
What is game-based learning and why should we be including it in our teaching practice?
Game-based learning (GBL) is a pedagogical approach that uses games and simulations to teach various subjects and skills. It engages students in a way that 'traditional' teaching methods do not. It's collaborative and removes the teacher from the centre of the classroom, by instead allowing students to learning and ask for help from one another. GBL is fun! Another key feature of game-based learning is that it provides immediate feedback to students. Receiving feedback in this way helps to improve a learner's confidence, and makes them excited about learning, and this in turn makes them more motivated.
Game Based Learning
Here is an example of a game-based lesson plan which I developed for a 5th Grade maths (fractions) lesson.
